First the worst…
Hey! I never thought that the day would come where I would have a blog. That’s a lie: I’ve thought about having a blog for a few years, but have been keeping the prospect at arms length for some time. I absolutely do not have anything interesting to say, and my life is absolutely not interesting enough to document in the regularity of a blog. BUT… I’m at a point in my career which I’m calling the ‘better late than never’ phase, where I have realised that I am in a branding business and should treat myself as such. I’m in Los Angeles, which is an infinitely more interesting place to be than London for me, and so just that alone will make these posts more interesting. Or, rather, they’ll give a semblance of interest for just long enough that I should develop a habit of doing the blog until I go back to London and then any readers will be either invested enough that they’re actually interested, or they’ll have bailed in the first few weeks so it won’t matter - either way, my nonsense will live on in some form. Intro: sorted. Next: My Life in the Last Year.
My Life in the Last Year -
So, I’ve embraced the cliché and headed West to LA to study at the Lee Strasberg Institute of Theatre and Film to try my hand at the movie business. COVID was (and I don’t think I’m being unreasonable by saying this) a total nonsense, to be frank. I spent much of it deciding how to revive a fairly non-existent, yet plucky, stage career. I started writing, and produced some (“Hilarious” - unverified) radio plays during lockdown, and wrote and filmed a sketch show with my wonderful friend Anthony Marulanda-Carter (big up my man). I was offered an amazing opportunity as the lead on a feature by Afilm Studio which honestly turned me right around. It made me realise that A) I was totally in love with this career, B) I wanted to act in movies forever, and C) I was wildly underprepared for the career that I now knew I wanted. This is nothing to do with my previous training; I just needed new tools for a new side of the industry. I applied to the LSI, got in, and a summer later - here I am.
I had my first class today, where I learned that I sit down wrong, and that I can memorise small and basic movement routines remarkably quickly. Kid’s on a roll. I’m here to win, and I think I won today. It was, at the very least, a photo-finish; and I love photos.
